Something I've utilized and benefited from this semester is canvas notifications. I get daily reports and immediate notifications about certain changes my professors make to my canvas courses. For instance, I get an email when something is graded, when a new assignment is posted, and when an announcement is made.
It is easy to enable canvas notifications. Here are the steps.
1. Log into your canvas account
2. Click on "Account" on the top left of the page
3. On the drop-down menu, select "Notifications"
4. Chance your notification preferences to whatever you want!
You can be notified of a certain action immediately, daily, weekly, or never.

Famous Last Words: Busy Busy Busy
This semester has been incredibly busy so far, but the last week and a half have been the busiest by far. Last Monday and Friday I had tests, Wednesday was the application deadline for a research grant through the honor's college, and I've been working all weekend! Here pretty soon I will be going back to work for my last shift of the week, and I'm definitely looking forward t it.
I feel bad, because this week was so incredibly busy that I didn't even have time to do any reading for this class, and thus I was unable to write a story. I tried to squeeze it in, but I just did not have the time. I also hate that I haven't been writing down things that have been making me happy lately, which is also due to my hectic schedule. I really did enjoy it though, and I'm going to try to pick it back up again after this week is finally finished. I had some awful things happen in my personal life the past two weeks, and I'm eager to put them behind me and try to start fresh next week. I did get to end last week on a good note, though - I finally got my $4,000 scholarship I've been patiently waiting to receive for like, a year and a half! That's a huge relief.
I know I won't get way more extra free time after this week, but I can't wait to have a little break! I'm really looking forward to going home for thanksgiving, and having a few days off of school. I'm sure you all are excited for some time off too! I actually can't believe the holidays are almost upon us... I'm kind of worried about Christmas, because being a college student, I'm basically too broke to get any of my loved ones gifts. I'm sure they will understand, but it still sucks not being able to give as much as I want to.
I know it's a little premature, but I hope whoever reads this has a great Thanksgiving and a happy holiday, whatever you may celebrate!

Extra Reading Notes: Santal Folklore Part A
I decided to do some extra credit reading notes. The unit I chose was Santal Folklore taken from Folklore of the Santal Parganas by Cecil Henry Bompas (1909). This is from the India unit.
The Monkey and the Girl
This story was very short, but very strange. A girl basically randomly promises to marry some thieving monkey, which makes her family mad. The family go kill the monkey and are going to burn it at the stake. The girl tells the people that she wants to watch the monkey burn. When they light him on fire, the girl throws sand in their eyes and jumps into the fire to die with the monkey.... All very strange... I think a good story for this would be to write diary entries from the girl and the other villagers, about the monkey, and then about the girl's death. I could include an entry about the girl falling in love with the monkey, describing how she feels about him and what not. I could also write an entry from the point of view of the kid who told the girl's family that she loved the monkey - he/she could discuss how strange it was that the girl promised to marry the monkey, and also talk about how he/she told her family. A diary entry from the dad or other relative of the girl may be good to include as well. I could write about their disgust, and their plot to kill the monkey.

This story, especially the beginning, was creepy! Ghormuhas sound terrifying, but I wonder what else they do with their time other than cooking and eating humans. I could write a story from the perspective of the Ghormuhas. I could show them in everyday life, doing things like going shopping, hanging out with friends, and maybe plotting some evil deeds for good measure.

Wikipedia Trails, Week 12
This is my first time attempting this extra credit assignment, and I'm pretty excited! I chose to start with a topic we are covering in my Pathogenic Microbiology class: Ebola!
Ebola Virus
We all remember the terrifying Ebola outbreak of 2014, but did you know that Ebola was first discovered in 1976! Although I knew that before reading this wikipedia thanks to my course, I was still surprised when I first learned this fact.
As I was looking through this page, I come upon the subtitle "Weaponization" under which I learned about "Biopreparat."
Biopreparat
Biopreparat was (is??) the Soviet Union's network of secret research labs that worked to weaponize deadly pathogens and toxins. They weaponized Smallpox, Anthrax, Influenza, and Ebola, among others. Biological weapons were outlawed by the Biological Weapons Convention of 1972, but the Soviet Union continued to investigate their uses in secret.
After learning about this, I was interested in learning more about the Biological Weapons Conventions.
Biological Weapons Convention
The Biological Weapons Convention was a treaty that supplemented the Geneva Convention and outlawed the use or research of biological weapons. Here is a summary of the articles, per Wikipedia.
I knew biological weapons were outlawed, but it was cool to find out exactly when and how they were banned. I was interested in knowing more about the start of biological warfare, so I followed the link!
Biological Warfare
Wikipedia dates biological warfare back to the 6th century, during which Assyrians would poison their enemies' wells with a pathogenic fungus that caused neurological symptoms. During World War 2, Winston Churchill advocated for research to weaponize botulism and anthrax toxins, among others. The UK also encouraged the United States to do the same, and they complied. According to Wikipedia, neither country used the biological weapons in an offensive manner.

- Article VII: To assist States which have been exposed to a danger as a result of a violation of the BWC.
- Article X: To do all of the above in a way that encourages the peaceful uses of biological science and technology.
